Hawaiian legend visits Captain Cook's birthplace

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 March, 2006 : - - North shore legend Tom Stone is visiting England for a two week surf festival in the region where Captain James Cook was born and raised. He's travelling to the great explorer's heartland to present a series of talks on Hawaiian culture and the significance of surfing in the history of the Islands.

During his stay he'll be hand shaping a replica of an ancient Olo, like that of Hawaiian chief Abner Paki who's original board is on display at an exhibition of British surfing history.

Stone is also making a holua sled, and will give riding demonstrations on replicas of ancient finless planks on the beach and reef breaks around Saltburn, England. The festival runs from March 25 - April 8 and has been organised by the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum at Marton which is hosting the event, and the British Surfing Museum.

"To have a Hawaiian legend come to Cook's birthplace and feel the aloha from the surfers in the north east of England is going to be an amazing experience," said Pete Robinson of The Surfing Museum. "I'm honoured Tom has agreed to come over and share is knowledge and love for surfing and it's history and how it helped shape Hawaiian culture and spread all over the world."

The Surfing Museum's exhibition of British surfing history continues at the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum until June 6th - including the world's oldest surfboard on loan from the Bishop Museum.

Pete Robinson will also be giving demonstrations on vintage British surfboards and a talk on UK surf history.
