Melkbosstrand to host second event in 2006 Kahuna Surf Series
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 October, 2006 : - - The most suitable surf available in the Melkbosstrand area will be used when the second of the three events in the 2006 Kahuna Surf Series for novice surfers in the Western Cape is run on the weekend November 4 & 5.
Entries for the event close on Monday 30 October and already more than sixty surfers who have not previously qualified for the final of a national surfing event have submitted their names for the seven categories that will be contested.
Following the completion of the first event in the series at Muizenberg Corner earlier this month, Jordan Maree from Tokai heads the U10 rankings while 2005 Melkbos winner Dominic Notten (St James) and newcomer Constance Haas (Plumstead) are top of the U12 boys and girls standings respectively.
Melkbos local Leon du Preez will be determined to defend the U14 boy’s crown in his home surf and Sabrina Scott (Glencairn) will be just as keen to add a second U14 girl’s title to the inaugural win she posted at Muizenberg.
In the U16 categories, current girl’s ratings leader Kirsten Kingma finished runner-up at Melkbos last year and going one better at the same venue next weekend would put the Hout Bay teenager in pole position for the series title while Grant Arendse (Strandfontein) needs to call on all his contest savvy to overcome the Melkbos locals and register a second successive victory.
The finalists in KSS events receive valuable prizes sponsored by a broad range of the country’s top surf and youth brands including Reef Wetsuits, Kustom footwear, Puma sports, Island Style accessories, Palmers surfwax, Cobian sandals, Zigzag surfing magazine and Lifestyle Surf shop.
The series champions are determined by the total points accumulated over the three events and they receive commemorative medals, custom wetsuits from Reef, Freestyle watches and a three-day intensive surf training camp at the Kahuna Surfing Academy in Kommetjie.
There are also specialty prizes of Von Zipper eyewear for the top U16 boy and girl as well as a custom designed DVG surfboard shaped by Kommetjie based Dave van Ginkel for the best overall performer in the series.
Spectators and competitors are invited to participate in plenty of other beach activities and competitions during each event with great prizes of sponsors’ products.
Weather permitting, aircraft owner Manel Avela has offered to fly over the contest site on both days to photograph and video the event as well as keeping an eye open for any sharks that may be cruising in the vicinity of the competitors.
The Kahuna Surf Series is sanctioned by WP Surfing, the provincial governing body of the sport, and further details are available at the Kahuna Surf Website where the Entry Form can be downloaded.
