HURRICANE FELIX PROVIDES “HAWAII” LIKE WAVES FOR JAMAICAN SURFING COMMUNITY
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 September, 2007 : - - Felix, the fifth system of the 2007 hurricane season, passed 150 miles south of Jamaica at category 5 strength setting up some of the most impressive waves of the season. The south coast surfing community woke up on election day 2007 to sea the whole south east coast alive with world class surfing waves.
The centre of attention was the “Runways” surfing beach at the end of the NMIA runway at Plumb Point. Under the vigilant eye of the lighthouse the local surfers made the most of the perfect surfing conditions. With waves in excess of 15’ the action was exciting for the small group of spectators on the beach.
Luke Williams, Billy Mystic, Ishack and Icah Wilmot, Joel “OT” Lawrence, Pierre Diaz Eneson Lightbourn and Warren Marley all paddled out to sample the heaving surf. The days stand outs included rides by Luke, Ishack and Billy who all rode waves and completing the very difficult “Tube Ride” much to the thrill of the crowd on the beach.

At one point every one had a bad scare when a huge set of waves came in catching all the surfers unawares and Billy’s board came loose resulting in a long and very dangerous swim back into shore for him and was drowned by the enormous waves i9n the process.
The waves continued to increase in size steadily until they peaked at about 20 feet before the sea breeze came up causing a deterioration in the wave quality resulting in an end to the mornings activities.
