TWENTY THREE COUNTRIES REGISTER TO COMPETE AT 8TH PAN AM SURFING GAMES

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 October, 2007 : - - Jamaica is one of twenty three countries from The Caribbean, North, Central, and South America who have registered to compete at the eighth renewal of the Pan American Surfing Games which will be hosted by the Chilean Surfing Federation in the town of Iquique in northern Chile. The Games will be held from the 4th to the 11th of November.

Both the North American nations of Canada and the USA will field teams to the Games. The Central American Nations of Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala and El Salvador have all registered teams to compete.

The Caribbean region will be well represented with the seven island nations of Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico as well as Trinidad & Tobago registering teams. South America will also have seven nations represented with the presence of Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela and hosts Chile.

The last time Jamaica fielded a team to the biennial Games was in 2003 in Ecuador where only 11 nations were represented. At those Games Jamaica was only able to send a five member team and placed tenth only bettering our eastern Caribbean neighbors Barbados, who had fielded an even smaller team than ourselves.

This year with a fourteen member team and entrants in five of the six divisions, Jamaica will be able to accumulate more points and thus stand a much better chance of finishing higher up in the regional ranking.

Jamaica is becoming more and more of a force in Caribbean surfing and has taken the stage at many high profile international events around the world over the past 6 years. As a result of the JSA’s on-going Development Plan, Jamaica’s surfing athletes have benefited from access to improved coaching programs, training techniques and world class custom manufactured surfing equipment, resulting in constantly improving national and individual world rankings.

The team has been in training over the past month under the guidance of National Team Coach Mr. Eugene Miller who has submitted the list of athletes who will compete for Jamaica to the officials of the Pan American Surfing Association. The team will be as follows.

“We are looking forward to the chance to compete at the Games which is the stellar surfing event of the western hemisphere” said team Coach Mr. Eugene Miller. The team will depart for Iquique on the 31st of October. This will give them a few days before the games begin on the 4th of November to acclimatize to the very cold water of the southern Pacific Ocean.

To help with this, team will be wearing the latest in wetsuit technology provided by team wetsuit sponsor ‘Body Glove Wetsuits”. Other National Sponsors include Insight Clothing, Quashi Surfboards and the Sports Development Foundation. The team will return to the island on November 14th.
