COSTA RICA NATIONAL SURF TEAM ARRIVES FOR CENTRAL AMERICAN SURF CHAMPS > Espanol abajo
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 March, 2008 : - - After a 15-hour highway bus trip, the selected members of the Costa Rica National Surf Team arrived in Playa Venao, Provincia de Todos Los Santos, Panamá, to begin the III Campeonato Centroamericano de Surf de Panamá 2008.
Today, the team, made up of 15 members in the divisions of Open, Junior, Women, Bodyboard, Bodyboard Women’s, and Longboard, made its first practice at the competition’s staging area at Venano, where the conditions were very good.
With waves of 4 to 6 feet and strong offshore winds, the Ticos worked with the single goal: to take back to their country the third consecutive Central American Surf Championship trophy in the three years the country has participated in the regional tournament.
“In the morning, when we began our training, the waves were not the best, but in the evening when the sea began to fill with tubes and the breaks got even better, we got the indication that this was going to be a match of a very high level. Personally, these are the type of waves here in Venao, that I believe will be of benefit to me and the team,” affirmed Costa Rican Open category teammember Mattías Brown of Montezuma.
The Central American Surf Championships will begin tomorrow, Friday morning, at 8 a.m. Panama time with Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Panama all prepared with their National Surf Teams.
Apart from Costa Rica owning the two Central American Surf Championships, the Ticos also are the current Open, Women’s and Junior Champions as well, with Lisbeth Vindas and Jairo Pérez, both of Jaco, the titleholders in the last two spots. (Tamarindo’s Federico Pilurzu has been the current Central American Open Champion for the last two years, but he is not in Panama, due to his ASP World Qualifying Series trek, where he is currently ranked #28.)
According to Cedric Auffret of Tamarindo, selected this year for the Longboard category, the conditions for his division are good. "The point located in front of the main platform closes for both sides,” he explained. “In addition, offshore winds are helping to create long rides.”
In addition, Joan Mojica of Jaco selected in Bodyboard said: “The wave is strong and hollow and that will help, without a doubt, when looking to make a greater amount of maneuvers. The most important thing are faces for us bodyboarders.”
For the first heats tomorrow, the Central American Surf Championships will run Wildcards. These trials are for those surfers that were not high enough in the Circuito Nacional de Surf rankings to make the National Selections, but still would like to compete for the Costa Rican Team.
Jaco’s Juan Carlos Naranjo and Luis Vindas will surf in the trials for the Open category; Derek Gutiérrez (Jaco), Danny Bisko (Esterillos) and Anthony Segura (Quepos) in Junior; and finally Debbie Zec (Dominical) will try-out for the Women’s category. Should they pass in the Wildcard, they will compete with the National Team.
In total, the focus, from the start, for the Costa Rica National Surf Team, according to Jose Ureña, President of the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica, is to concentrate on its strategy. “We remember that we are the team to beat here in Panama,” Ureña said. “So what we are going to do is give best of ourselves. Our surfing level is high so that speaks a lot to the others.”
With that, the Tico surfers entered the water today to strong crowd applause and in great spirits.

Selección Nacional de Surf lista para la acción en Playa Venao
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 March, 2008 : - - Después de 15 horas de viaje por carretera en autobús, la Selección Nacional de Surf finalmente arribó a Playa Venao en la provincia de Los Santos, para dar inicio al III Campeonato Centroamericano de Surf de Panamá 2008.
El día de hoy, la selección integrada por 15 miembros en cinco diferentes categorías (Open, Junior, Mujeres, Bodyboard, Bodyboard Femenino y Longboard) realizó su primer reconocimiento del punto de competencia en Venao, donde las condiciones del oleaje se presentaron muy buenas.
De 4 a 6 pies de altura y con fuerte offshore, recibió el mar a los atletas ticos que llegaron a Panamá con una sola meta: llevarse para su casa el tercer campeonato del área de manera consecutiva.
“En la mañana que entrenamos en marea ceca la olas no eran las mejores; sin embargo, por la tarde cuando el mar empezó a llenar los tubos y el quiebre parejo dan indicios que va a ser un torneo que propicia el alto nivel. En lo personal este tipo de olas en Venao, creo que me beneficiarán”, afirmó Mattías Brown, seleccionado Open de la tricolor.
La competencia iniciará mañana al ser la 8 a.m. (hora de Panamá) con la participación de los 5 equipos del Itsmo. Tanto El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panamá, Guatemala, como Costa Rica se entrenan fuerte para dar inicio a unos de los campeonatos latinos más esperados del año.
Recordemos que la Selección de Costa Rica es Bicampeón Centroamericano por equipos. En lo individual, igualmente tiene a los Campeones y Subcampeones. Para esta ocasión vendrán a defender su título el Junior Jairo Pérez y Lisbeth Vindas para la categoría Mujeres. Este tercer Centroamericano contará con tres categorías demás incluidas, la Longboard, Bodyboard y Bodyboard Mujeres.
Según Cedric Auffret, seleccionado para la categoría Longboard, las condiciones para la tabla larga son buenas. “El pico ubicado frente a la tarima principal cierra para ambos lados, además el offshore (viento de frente al mar) ayuda creando largos recorridos”, aseveró.
Además, Joan Mojica seleccionado en Bodyboard dijo: “La ola está fuerte y hueca, eso ayudará sin duda al brindar una mayor cantidad de maniobras, la más importante los tubos en marea ceca para nosotros los bodyboarders”.
La Competencia
Para el día de mañana los primeros heats de competencia los correrán los tablistas en condición de Wildcard. Los llamados trials son cupos para centroamericanos que asistan a competir pero que no podrán sumar puntos para su selección.
De esta manera, por Costa Rica asistieron condicionados los tablistas Juan Carlos Naranjo y Luis Vindas para la categoría Open, Dereck Gutiérrez, Dany Bishko y Anthony Segura en Junior, y finalmente Debbie Zec en Mujeres, son los 6 ticos que arribaron por su cuenta con la ilusión de hacer un buen papel en este torneo del Itsmo 2008.
Una vez clasificados los surfistas en los trials, la competición ordinal dará partida con las cinco selecciones.
El día de hoy la concentración tricolor sentó bases en sus estrategias, débiles y fuertes para empezar a dar batalla mañana cuando empiece la acción. “Recordemos que somos el equipo a vencer aquí en Panamá, así que todos vamos a dar lo mejor de sí y apoyémonos unos a los otros”, exclamó José Ureña, Presidente de la Federación de Surf que asiste en calidad de Director Técnico.
