Costa Rica National Junior Surf Team digs into Quiksilver ISA World Jr Champs
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 May, 2008 : - - The Costa Rica National Junior Surf Team is already in Hossegor-Capbreton-Seignosse, France for its commitment with the 2008 Quiksilver International Surfing Assocation (ISA) World Junior Surfing Championship (WJSC) that will take place May 24 through June 1, 2008. A few days ago, however, the Team carried out a friendly practice towards the title.
After a delay of five hours in San Jose, Costa Rica, then numerous hours in the air towards Madrid, the tricolor and its technical advisors finally landed in Biarritz, nearby Hossegor.
After resting, they prepared for the planned BiNational Surf Tournament organized by the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica board member Christophe Commarieu and the French Federation of Surf. A series of two Ticos went up against two French surfers in nine heats of 20 minutes duration.
Everyone of the Costa Rica National Surf Team competed—all 14 including the substitutes—competed against French surfers of great levels including 2005 ISA Junior World Champion Pauline Ado, and male European stars such as Charles Martin and Marc Lacomere.
According to Randall Chávez, manager of the Tico Team, this competition was very beneficial, although it was a challenge for them to adapt to the waves. Sets came every 5 minutes with a size of about 1 foot.
Nevertheless, the climate in Hossegor seemed to cooperate for the Costa Ricans as the sun shined on the BiNational contest allowing what seemed to be the whole city to watch the first surf tournament between a Latin American and a European delegation.
Once the encounter between nations was completed, a memorable reception took place, beginning with a luncheon program by the French Federation at 5:00 p.m., followed by a tribute to both teams by the Municipality of Biarritz. “The sport authorities of Biarritz delivered to the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica (FSC) the present of a beautiful reception. For the FSC, we thank them for such a special welcome to the city,” recounted Chávez.
The combined tricolor Team, at that moment, was provided with accommodations in Surf Biarritz Club, where they have remained to train and become accustomed to the cold water and the use of their wetsuits. The temperature of the water is even more accessible than in Chile and Portugal, last two countries where the Costa Rica National Juniors have participated in the ISA WJSCs.
The selection will start off tomorrow for Hossegor and the first heats of the 2008 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships.
