Costa Ricans finish action in repercharge rounds of Quiksilver ISA World Juniors
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 May, 2008 : - - Hossegor -- As the day finished yesterday at the 2008 Quiksilver International Surfing Association (ISA) World Junior Surfing Championship (WJSC) in Hossegor, France all the Costa Rica National Junior Surf Team fell into the repercharge rounds.
The main focus was on the individual contests of Jairo Pérez and Nataly Bernold, who as of yesterday, were still competing in the main event of their divisions. Pérez, however was discharged from his heat after placing 3rd with a score of 10.27 behind 1st place Frenchman Marc Lacomare with 13.67, and 2nd place New Zealander Paco Divers with 10.70. For want of time looking to obtain a better second wave, Jairo was frustrated and was sent to repercharge for this morning.
Along with Pérez, Nataly Bernold also dropped from the primary event in a difficult heat that saw her fall to the 4th position. In her heat, 1st place went to the South African Bianca Buitendag, 2nd place to New Zealand’s Airini Mason and 3rd place to Hawaii’s Leila Hurst. She, too, goes to repercharge.
The rest of the Costa Rica National Surf Team, in their respective repercharge heats, advanced yesterday in rounds 2 and 3. In the Juniors, Less than 18 years of age, Anthony Segura was still alive to participate today in the sixth day of competition.
In the Less than 16 years of age, the very precise surfer Mykol Torres continued to classify by placing 1st place in his heat and passing to round 3. Jose Calderón was not so lucky, after falling out. Carlos Muñoz and Anthony Fillingim are scheduled today to see if they can advance along with Torres.
As to the ladies, Debbie Zec, Anastassia Patterson and Lupe Galluccio will no longer be competing, although they advanced to round 3 and then fell out with poor results. Thus, Bernold is the only female left representing Costa Rica, and next to Valeria Solé of Peru, they are the only Latin girls in repercharge round 4 at the moment.
At the halfway point of the 2008 Quiksilver ISA WJSC and the Costa Rica National Junior Surf Team maintains 50 percent of its athletes in the competition, still on their way to the self-imposed goal of placing within the top 10 countries of the WJSC.
