Costa Rica's annual Torneo Benefico de Surf '08 readies

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 September, 2008 : - - José Ureña, President of the Federacion de Surf (FSC) de Costa Rica, announced that the FSC will officially take over the Annual Torneo Benéfico de Surf, in its sixth year. The contest at Boca, Puntarenas, which helps finance the programs and basic needs of the boy’s home Hogar Monserrat de Niños, located in San Miguel de Barranca, will take place beginning today, September 12, and be carried out September 13 and 14, as well.

The Toreneo Benéfico de Surf will also be unique in that it will feature the participation of the most outstanding surfers in Costa Rica—the National Surf Team—as they prepare for their competition October 11 through 19, 2008 at the 2008 International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games (WSG) that will take place in Costa de Caparica, Portugal.

This will be the last Costa Rican tournament for Gilbert Brown (Puerto Viejo), Luis Vindas (Jaco), Jason Torres (Jaco) Germaine “Nino” Myrie (Puerto Viejo), Matías Braun (Montezuma, substitute), Isaac Vega, (Tamarindo, substitute), Lisbeth Vindas, (Jaco), Nataly Bernold (Jaco), Verónica Quirós  (Jaco, substitute), Diego Naranjo (Jaco), Cristian Santamaría (Jaco, substitute), Jimena Calvo (Boca Boranca), Cindy Díaz (Jaco, substitute), Richard Marín (Jaco), Yeffrey Gómez (Jaco), and Walter Gatgens (Jaco, substitute)  before they leave for Europe.

This Boca Barranca date represents one of the most classic competitions of Costa Rican surfing. According the history, this was the spot where the pioneers of surfing first ran waves, making their way from San Jose in the early days of the sport. This wave is considered one of the best in the country for the practice of longboarding as it is a long left, sometimes reaching 800 meters in good conditions.

As this is a well-known area, the public ‘chuchequero’ jammed last year’s event, and this year the Mayor of Punteranas, Lic. Agnes Gómez will celebrate this province’s 150 years with the inauguration of a big celebration. The Punteranas Canton Sports Committee was also pleased to support the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica in carrying out this contest date, which now will count as part of the 2008-09 Circuito Nacional de Surf. (CNS), the countrywide  surf tournament.

Luis Vindas, the surfer of Jaco Beach, has won the last four contests of this Annual Torneo Benéfico de Surf, making a monopoly of 1st place in the Open category since the year 2003. For this weekend, several important factors come into play with regard to whether or not he may take 1st place again.

First, Vindas has already been selected as one of the Costa Rica National Surf Team who will go to the ISA World Surfing Games in Portugal, and he has had a small ankle ailment that made a fast and simple recovery. Secondly, since this is the last contest before the international tournament, Vindas may opt to give his all, since several of the other National Team members have been preparing to hit the Torneo Benéfico de Surf in this manner in order to raise their levels before representing Costa Rica abroad.

The Torneo Benéfico de Surf will feature five categories: Open, Women, Junior, Longboard and Bodyboard. Inscriptions will be tonight between 5 and 7 p.m. at the Hotel Boca Barranca
