Great waves a treat for the sea witch
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 October, 2008 : -- In some of the best surf that Delmarva has seen all fall. Over 100 competitors turned out for the Sea Witch, which had been relocated from Indian River Inlet in Delaware to 48th Street, Ocean City, due to the forecasted swell. As a result, surfers were able to take advantage of the amazing sandbar that has recently formed off of one of the favorite breaks in Ocean City.
Light offshore winds groomed the well overhead A frames into some of the best surf seen in months, and conditions stayed great all day. This was the first solo contest for newly appointed ESA Director Chris Makibbin and his wife and Director Cammie. Chris's intimate knowledge of area breaks stood him in good stead as he called it on for 48th Street, taking advantage of the new sandbar which really hadn't been working just weeks before.
And the results were really mind blowing. Sensational barrel rides were the order of the day, with right and left hand tubes equally available. But for those not comfortable charging and pulling in to big barrels, there were some horrifying drops and spectacular wipeouts as well. This season there has been a new dimension added to the Open Shortboard Division. The end of the year points leader will receive a free plane ticket to Puerto Rico for the Regionals next Spring.
As a result, there has been some particularly stiff competition in that division. Scrappy Dillon Harrington has been the points leader all season, with Travis Knight, Matt Meinhardt, and Walden Remington closing in fast. But on Sunday, Travis Knight took first place, and Dillon took second, and Walden took third, which still leaves Dillon with a slight lead and an even closer race.
With one more contest scheduled for this season, the top contenders will have to go a final round before claiming that airline ticket. The Ho Ho Surf Off will be held on December 6th and 7th at North Side Indian River Inlet or Tower Road in Delaware and will determine the winner of the free trip to Puerto Rico.
