Proctor makes it two in a row at Hyundai Pro Longboard
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 February, 2009 : - - Gisborne’s Daniel Proctor claimed back-to-back victories on the Hyundai Pro Longboard Tour today when he won the third of six events staged at Sandy Bay, north of Whangarei. Proctor most recently claimed his first national championship at Piha and with this event win jumps to number one on the ratings.
Swell of up to 1.0m rolled into the bay and conditions remained excellent with the lack of wind throughout the day. Proctor decided to get into action early in the final with his second wave tallying 8.25 points out of a possible 10 to anchor his 17.25 point heat total in the final. Wanting to increase the pressure on his opponents Proctor followed that up with a 9.0 point ride to jump well clear of the other three finalists.
Late in the final Mike Burling (Gis) took two successive waves apart with an 8.0 and 8.75 elevating himself in to second place after originally trailing Thomas Kibblewhite (Auck) who held on to second place for much of the final but ultimately finishing in third. Fellow Auckland surfer Phil Morris placed fourth in the final.
The Women’s final was always going to be a bit of a tussle with a few old scores to settle. Immediately, Anna Jolly (Auck) and Shelly Jones (Auck) locked horns while Josephine Moore (Tara) and Daisy Thomas (Chch) looked for righthanders on the southern side of the contest zone.
It was a tight heat and the scores show that with both Jolly and Jones scoring 9.5 points each. Jolly won on a ‘count back’ after the two surfers were tied at the end of the final. Moore scored 7.9 points and Thomas scored 7.35 points to finish third and fourth respectively. The result has no bearing on the top of the ratings with Thomas still well out in front of her opponents.
The Junior Men’s Division final was also tightly contested with Sam Guthrie (Mnt) scoring 13.6 points, Sam Hawke (Chch) 13.3 points and Leroy Rust (Dun) 12.5 points. A mere 1.0 points separated first from third with Hone Douglas (Ohope) only slightly behind scoring 11.0 in fourth.
The Over 40 Men’s Division was won by Lynden Kennings (WGM). Kennings stormed into the lead early in the final and never looked back. David Storck (Piha) surfed to a creditable second place with Chris Spiers (Waihi Beach) in third and Stephen Andrews (Auck) in fourth.
The Over 50 Men’s Division had testing conditions with the lower tide and the wind decided to increase. This made wave choice paramount and it was Paul Hardy (Auck) who came out on top ahead of Barry Watkins (HBay), David Storck (Piha) and Dave Reed (Auck).
