Eastern Surfing Association gets great surf for Judith Lighthouse contest
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 June, 2009 : - - It has never happened twice in one season before. The Eastern Surfing Association pulled off another rated contest in perfect waves at the Point Judith lighthouse for the second time in three months thanks to the great call by ESA Co-Director Ron Belanger.
After checking out the wind and swell conditions earlier during the week Belanger made the call on Thursday evening moving the contest site to the best surf.
“We pulled up to the parking lot and saw glassy 3-5 footers rolling in and knew we made the right choice,” said Ron. “It is very rare that you can catch this premier point break with no crowd. There were no other surfers there for the entire competition, which is unbelievable.”
Competitors made the most of the well formed waves which were predominantly left peaks with long and workable walls. The toughest contest came in the Open Division, where New England’s top men’s surfer, John Basile battled the top senior man, Ron Belanger for the title. Despite a dramatic 360’ that landed by Basile, Belanger picked off the two biggest left peaks of the heat and threw almost a dozen slash backs and lip smacks to win it. Hot local Junior Men’s rider James Pilkington took the 3rd spot with some nice carves on the inside section.
Pat Redmond had the hottest ride of the day as he won the Open Bodyboard Final with a stunning barrel ride on a hollow head high left tube and pulled off a perfect backside drop-knee 360’ for perfect scores.
The closest contest came in the Men’s Longboard Final, when Jarrett Parker edged out recent New England Longboard Classic winner, Naoto Ohashi for the crown. While Ohashi pulled off some great hot dogging moves, Parker had two lined up left walls that he worked into the shorebreak for more points.
Eight-year old Jana Laurendeau was impressive in her first ESA contest of the season, as she stayed in close and picked off some nice lined up left walls to win both the Menehune and Menehune Bodyboard titles.
Jarrett Parker moved up to the Masters Division and easily won that crown with some nice inside barrels. Ron Belanger finished up his most productive contest ever as an ESA competitor, winning the Senior Men’s and Master Longboard titles, as well as taking the Open crown.
The next rated ESA competition is expected to take place on July 4th at the Narragansett Town Beach. It is the First Annual Stand-Up Paddle Board Championships. There will be rated competition in the Junior Men, Open, Senior Men, and Women’s divisions. There will be a paddle board race from the seawall to the Dunes Club and back. Surfing competition will take place directly after the races conclude. For more information email: bicsurf@hotmail.com.
