Underdogs takes over at the VQS Dodofish surf series, Reunion Island
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 November, 2009 : - - While writing this report, long lines are peeling at the mythic lefthander of St Leu, Reunion Island…That wasn’t the case last week-end for the Dodofish surf series. The Forecast was really bad and we weren’t supposed to get any surf at all at the contest spot, Trois Bassins ; but once again Poseidon sent us decent waves to run the comp throughout the week end.
It’s always good to come down to the southern hemisphere in November where the water temperature is good to go for boardshorts compared to the shorter days and worse weather in the European continent.
The contest has rolled so well the past 2 years that some features are set to stay : again a local palm tree cabana was built for everyone to escape from the crazy sun and get free food and refreshments, our classic Australian beach marshall, Joe, was still here and tons of kids were frothing all day long asking to play games for prizes...
Trois-bassins is a typical family spot, with a similar vibe to Haleiwa beach in Hawaii. Grandaddies are fishing on the rocks, and daddies are surfing the outside peak while kids stay in the sheltered inside reforms. With so many little rippers ruling the Inside, it made sense to add a « Super groms » expression session in our Schedule.

The Island definitely has it’s fair share of talents, some allready ripping at 5 years old ! But the boss was 10year old Lucas Bernard, who showed an incredible confidence and maturity to overcome all the other mini groms.
In the grommets division, all the locals where happy to meet Volcom Europe’s Andy Crière, and determined to beat him in their territorial waters. In the end, only Pablo Goncalves took the edge on him with solid carving. Juniors final was very competitive and tactical. With anticipation on a Two men clash between two French national team members Kieren Bulard, and Tom Neuschwanger, the two odd finalists, Martin Jannier and Jorgan Couzinet stole the show, with Martin on top !
The girls final was a 2008 remake. Canelle Bulard re-claimed her title in front of last year’s runner up Johanne Defaye, with Camille Davila in third and Joanne Panzini in fourth. In the open final, Damien Chaudoy got the bomb which sealed the deal in a really slow heat, leaving Kieran Bulard in second, last years winner Adrien Toyon in 3rd and Medi Veminardi in 4th. In the end, the 2009 Dodo Fish was a great success with plenty of action both on land and in the waves.
