SURFRIDER HOSTS A BEACH CLEANUP WITH AIRWALK SHOES AND PRO SURFER ANASTASIA ASHLEY

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 November, 2009 : - - Honolulu, Oahu - The Surfrider Foundation Oahu Chapter will host a cleanup on the North Shore at Sunset Beach on Sat., 12/5/09, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm.  Surfrider is partnering with Airwalk Shoes and pro surfer and model Anastasia Ashley to remove trash from Sunset Beach to Pipeline.  Airwalk will give away t-shirts to the first 40 volunteers and sponsor lunch and raffle prizes at the end of the cleanup.  Volunteers are invited to recycle old plastic bags to pick up trash and bring reusable water bottles. Surfrider’s Oahu chapter will be selling their new reusable canteens and tote bags.

As part of its Rise Above Plastics (RAP) campaign, Surfrider is working to reduce the proliferation of single-use plastic bags and water bottles, as well as the number one littered item worldwide—cigarette butts.  The RAP program also seeks to promote a more sustainable lifestyle and educate people about the prevalence of plastic marine debris on our beaches and oceans.  For more info, visit the program’s website at www.riseaboveplastics.org.  Surfrider hosts monthly cleanups with partners like Airwalk and Anastasia Ashley help to keep our beaches and coastlines clean and educate the public about ocean-related issues.

Anastasia Ashley grew up in  Hawaii, tried surfing at the age of 5, and has been a dedicated surfer ever since. Anastasia is not only a pro surfer but a successful model as well and has been called the “Maria Sharapova” of surfing.  By 18, she had already won 2 NSSA National Titles and was named the ASP Hawaiian Triple Crown Rookie of the Year.  Most recently, she was the 2008 APSPR women's tour champion and a finalist at the 2009 Women's Pipeline Pro.  Anastasia is sponsored by Airwalk Shoes.

For over twenty years, Airwalk has continually broken new ground within youth board sports culture and youth lifestyle.  When it was introduced to the public in 1986, Airwalk immediately claimed a leadership position in the market with its introduction of innovative footwear for skateboarders, snowboarders, surfers and BMX riders.  Since then, Airwalk has continued to lead and has become a world-renowned brand responsible for the design of active and casual footwear, apparel and accessories.  More importantly, the brand maintains its role in the evolution of board sports culture.

The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and preservation of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches. Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers, the Surfrider Foundation is celebrating its 25th anniversary and now maintains over 50,000 members and 70 chapters across the United States. The Oahu Chapter is in its 14th year of activism and has been working on issues of beach access, water quality, coastal preservation and plastic marine debris.  For more information, go to www.surfrider.org/oahu
