Volcom's Torofish Surf Series scores clean Andalousia surf

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 December, 2009 : - - For the second consecutive year, La Barrosa beach in Chiclana hosted the Volcom Stone Torofish Surf Series, one of the last stop of the Totally Crustaceous Tour 2009-2010. One more time we were lucky with the weather conditions, Andalousia beeing known for its fickle waves.

We got welcomed with some glassy chest high waves and some sunshine during our stay with some really fun ones on the Friday and Monday. Saturday and Sunday saw some still contestable surf so the comp was on.

Even in the extreme South of Europe in December days are shorters so with more than a 100 contestants, both days were necessary to run the contest. People came from almost the whole peninsula : Galicia, Canarias, Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias and of course tons of locals.

In the groms division Javier Aragon took the win in small surf with Diego Alvarez getting a close 2nd place, Adran Strong taking 3rd and Ignacio Touzon finishing 4th.Girls division started on Sunday with a lot of close outs but there was still some good ones to be had. And in the end Yolanda Rodriguez from Galicia took the win, leticia Canales getting the 2nd custom Toro-Stone trophy, Elena Bravo ending at the 3rd spot and Rita Lohmann the 4th ; See you all at the European VQS champs in Capbreton !

Fernandez brothers dominated the Junior division and the battle was fierce until the final. With the tide coming in, waves opened up a bit more and allowed some more manoeuvers, Juanjo Fernandez took advantage of a good left to blow his tail and combo his brother and rivals to take the win and get Electric’s Volt Thrower award.

A lot of surfers entered the Open division, and a first 2 rounds saw some surprises with the early eliminations of Leiba’s brothers or Pablo Montero, all of them finalists last year. Jaji Iglesias from Vigo, Galicia was on fire despite a late night out and won all his heats, got a « bomb » during the final but couldn’t do anything against an in form Jose Maria Cabrera who came all the way from Canary Islands to enjoy some tostadas, stay fit, and get what Andalousia has to offer.

This lifestyle clash ended with Jose taking the win, Jaji taking the second place, local Roberto Diaz getting some good waves into the 3rd place and Guillermo Alonso unlucky in his good air reverse attempt taking the 4th place. The day ended with a giveaway shower down the beach and everybody went home with some prizes and a big smile.

Thanks to everyone that came enjoy the week end with us, And everyone that helped us to run the event : Chiclana city council, la Cruz Roja, Vicente from Oasis surf shop, Christobal and Diego for judging, Pablo Romero « occy » for the pics, Electric , Aerial7 and Vans. See you next VQS stop will be in Tenerife for the Lavafish surf series !
