White Sharks videotaped off of Los Angeles beach
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 June, 2010 : - - There have been several dozen shark breaches reported from the Sunset/Will Rogers State Beaches during the past 12 months. Last October 3rd, Randy Wright of Horizon’s West Surf Shop was able to capture several photographs of a breaching shark.
These are posted on the 2009 Pacific Coast Shark News pages. There still remain those skeptical individuals that doubt the authenticity of the reports and photographs. that were provided to the Shark Research Committee last year. Although shark breaches have been reported from other Southern California locations, including San Onofre State Beach, there still remains some skepticism.
On May 25 and May 28, 2010 video was obtained by Randy Wright definitively demonstrating this unique behavior. The shark that appears in the May 28, 2010 videotape is a juvenile white shark, 8 – 10 feet in length. Additional video was also obtained in February 2010 of a comparably sized white shark breaching at Sunset Beach.
The photographs and narrative of his encounters are posted on the Shark Research Committee’s Pacific Coast Shark News page. A link has been provided for your edification and convenience.
Shark encounters are not unusual this time of year in the Southern California area, which is believed to be a birthing location for white sharks. Juvenile sharks are frequently observed close inshore during those times of the month when the California Grunion spawn.
