Oxbow’s Matthew Moir chasing two World Longboard Surfing titles

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 September, 2008 : - - Cape Town -- Reigning ISA World Longboard Surfing champion and OXBOW team rider Matthew Moir has confirmed that he will be chasing two more World Titles before the end of 2008.

The 30-year-old Capetonian has been selected as a member of the 2008 Surfing South Africa (SSA) national team that will attend the biennial ISA World Surfing Games (WSG) in Portugal in October where he will defend the title he won at the corresponding event at Huntington Beach, California in 2006.

“I’m really happy to be able to defend the ISA World title in October,” Moir explained on hearing that he had been selected for the 2008 SSA team. “It’s going to be hard, particularly with the likes of current ASP ratings leader Harvey Ingleby (AUS), Antoine Delpero (FRA) and Ben Skinner (UK) there. But I managed to beat them the first time I was in the SA team and hopefully I can win the title again.”

The ISA WSG runs from 11-19 October at Costa de Caparica in Portugal and Moir, now married and with a recent addition to the family, will be returning to Cape Town for 10 days before traveling to California for the second leg of the OXBOW ASP World Longboard Championships at San Onofre in November.

The 2008 ASP world champion will be decided over two events. Moir placed fifth at the first stop at Anglet, France in May where he and 2007 ASP World champion Phil Razman (BRA) finished their quarterfinal clash equal on points. The Brazilian advanced to the semis after a count-back to each surfer’s single best ride.

“I still have chance to win the 2008 ASP title if I do well in California and other decisions go my way,” Moir said. “But it’s going to be a tough ask as all of the world’s top 48 longboarders will be at that one.”  Moir changed from traditionally glassed surfboards to Epoxy boards made by Stubby Surfboards earlier this year. He has stored the board he rode in France in May in his garage for the two World Championship events later this year.
